Former Students
Howdy Ags!

I am Kate Miller, the new Dean of the College of Geosciences. I want you to know how especially pleased and proud I am to have joined this College. I already feel at home in Texas and in the oil patch, having spent 18 years at the University of Texas at El Paso as a faculty member and academic administrator and over four years working for Amoco (now British Petroleum) in New Orleans.

Dr. Kate C. MillerFor many years, I have admired Texas A&M University not only for its major commitment to the Geosciences, but also as a rare institution where the Geosciences come together within a single organizational structure. In a global economy, where innovation in science and technology is increasingly occurring at the boundaries between disciplines, our college is extraordinarily well positioned to expand our role as an international leader in the geosciences.

A major factor in my decision to join Texas A&M was unquestionably the well-known loyalty of the community of former students. All great universities rely, in countless ways, on the enthusiastic support and selfless service of friends and former students. What sets our programs apart is the myriad ways that our friends and former students help us.

Whether you graduated a few years or a few decades ago, you are part of our Geosciences Aggie family, and we want to stay in touch and keep you informed about the college!

Let me just give you a few highlights here:

  • Oceanography will celebrate its 60th anniversary this fall with a symposium honoring the life and work of Robert Reid and highlighting the department’s accomplishments of the past and prospects for the future. Exciting new research partnerships and opportunities are currently being developed with China, Oman and in Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands.
  • Geology and Geophysics has established a new center dedicated to petroleum geology, the Berg-Hughes Center for Petroleum and Sedimentary Systems. The center will integrate geology, geophysics, and petroleum geology to produce tomorrow’s oil and gas industry leaders while providing the petroleum solutions needed today.
  • For the last two years Geography has been ranked in the top 10 nationally in faculty productivity. The Department’s 24 faculty members are recognized for their research and teaching in geography education, geospatial sciences, human-environment interactions, human geography, and physical geography.
  • A recent external review of Atmospheric Sciences found that with new faculty and increased support, the department is competitive with other top-tier meteorology and atmospheric science departments in the U.S. The department sponsored a symposium on climate, statistics and satellites in June that honored Distinguished Professor Gerald North on his 70th birthday.
  • Undergraduate enrollment in our Environmental Programs in Geosciences is growing at a record pace. The two interdisciplinary degree programs now have a director, academic advisor, and offices in O&M Room 105.
  • The graduate Water Management and Hydrologic Sciences program housed in our college is growing as well.
  • GERG (Geochemical and Environmental Research Group) continues to build on its strengths in ocean sciences and environmental chemistry while providing support for research and education to the college and the Oceanography Department.
  • Texas Sea Grant continues to promote the understanding, wise use and stewardship of Texas’ coastal and marine resources through support for research, outreach and education.
  • As a college, we are especially excited about entering a new era of scientific ocean drilling with the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. IODP’s recently renovated drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, resumed expeditions this spring and is continuing its mission of expanding scientific discoveries in sedimentology, paleontology, geochemistry, geophysics, petrology, paleomagnetism, physical properties, and downhole measurements.
